Coupon or straight price cut: which one costs you less?
A coupon and a price discount of the same size do not cost the same. How redemption charges, fee recalculation, price history, and partial take-up change which mechanism keeps more contribution.
The same 10% has two different price tags
A price cut applies to every unit sold while it is active. A coupon applies only to units where the buyer clips and redeems it, but many marketplaces add a per-redemption charge on top of the discount you fund. Partial redemption can make a coupon cheaper in total than the identical percentage taken off the price — or the redemption charges can erase exactly that advantage on low-priced items.
Recalculate fees on what the buyer actually pays
Price-based fees can shift when the transacted price shifts, and the two mechanisms can change that base differently. Do not assume the fee math from one mechanism carries over to the other: recalculate contribution per unit under each, and confirm against your own fee reports for a real order rather than a help-page summary.
Price history is a cost that outlives the promotion
A straight price cut becomes part of the product's visible price history and can reset buyer expectations and future reference prices. A coupon usually preserves the list price while still showing a visible badge. Neither effect appears in a spreadsheet unless you put it there, but both change what your next full-price week looks like.
Break-even lift is the deciding number
For each mechanism, compute contribution per unit after the discount, fees, and any per-redemption charge, then the extra units needed to match baseline contribution. If discounted contribution per unit is zero or negative, no volume rescues the promotion. Comparing the two break-even lifts side by side usually makes the choice for you.
