eBay item specifics: missing or invalid values cost you search placement.
eBay filters and ranks with item specifics, and 'required' keeps expanding. How to find which specifics your listings are missing, map product facts to eBay's expected values, and fix a backlog without retyping every listing.
Specifics are search filters, not paperwork
When a buyer filters by size, material, colour, or connectivity, eBay can only include your listing if the matching item specific is filled with a value it recognises. A listing with an empty required specific may still publish and quietly miss every filtered search — the damage is invisible unless you look for it.
Use eBay's vocabulary, not your packaging's
eBay suggests expected values per category. 'Stainless' on your box may need to be 'Stainless Steel' in the specific; free-text variants of a recognised value can fail to match the filter. Map each product fact to the closest recommended value and keep the creative phrasing for the title and description.
Required today is a moving target
eBay periodically promotes recommended specifics to required per category. A listing that was complete last quarter can be missing a required value today, so audits need to be repeatable, not one-off cleanups.
Fix the backlog in bulk, review before upload
For more than a handful of listings, export to CSV, fill the missing specifics from your product facts in one pass, and review the deltas before uploading. Never bulk-write values you cannot verify — a wrong specific earns returns and defects, which cost more than the missing filter match did.
