What do Walmart Search Insights rank gaps actually mean?

Compare seller-supplied impression, click, add-to-cart, and sales ranks, identify the largest relative funnel drop, and keep observed context separate from an unsupported root-cause claim.

Read rank direction before calculating a gap

In a rank field, a smaller positive number represents a better relative position. Preserve each item or query row's impression, click, add-to-cart, and sales ranks from the same Walmart report period and scope. Calculate a stage gap as the later-stage rank minus the earlier-stage rank: a positive gap means relative position weakened at that transition, while a negative gap means it improved. Do not read a larger rank number as higher performance.

Separate each transition instead of using one blended score

Compare impression-to-click, click-to-add-to-cart, and add-to-cart-to-sales gaps individually, then name the largest positive transition for the row. Also retain the net impression-to-sales gap. A row can recover after an early drop or deteriorate only near purchase, and a single blended number hides that shape. Preserve ties deterministically instead of inventing precision that the reported ranks do not contain.

Use commercial fields as context, not causal inputs

Keep seller-supplied transactability, Buy Box percentage, and Walmart-recommended keywords beside the rank gaps, but do not silently score them as proof of a cause. A click-rank gap could coexist with title, image, query-relevance, price, availability, fulfillment, or competition differences. A sales-rank gap can also reflect variation availability, reviews, returns, shipping promise, or other factors absent from the report.

Rank the review queue and the batch's dominant stage

Sort rows by the largest observed positive stage gap and stable identifiers, then count or total the gaps by transition across the supplied batch. The dominant stage shows where relative leakage concentrates within this input, which helps a seller choose what evidence to inspect first. It is not Walmart's score, a traffic or revenue estimate, a benchmark against competitors, or a forecast of lift from an edit.

Diagnose the current item before drafting a change

For high-priority rows, verify the current query, listing facts, image, offer, inventory, fulfillment promise, Buy Box context, and category requirements in seller-authorized sources. Preserve Walmart's recommended keywords exactly, then confirm each is factually relevant before using it. A rank gap shows where the funnel loses relative position, not why. Friday never changes a listing, keyword, bid, price, campaign, or seller setting.
