When should I harvest an Amazon search term as an exact keyword?

Distinguish a shopper's observed search term from its current target, qualify relevance and economics, and draft a non-duplicative exact-target handoff without changing a live Sponsored Products campaign.

Keep search term and target as separate fields

The customer search term is the observed query or product-detail context reported for an ad click; the targeting expression is what made the ad eligible. Preserve both with campaign, ad group, advertised product, match type, clicks, spend, attributed orders, and attributed sales. A winning query found through automatic, broad, phrase, or product targeting is evidence about that observation, not proof that an exact keyword will receive the same traffic, cost, placement, or conversion after promotion.

Qualify product relevance first

Confirm that the exact wording accurately describes the advertised product, its intended use, and any compatibility or audience claim. Hold competitor brands, unsupported materials, sizes, certifications, medical outcomes, and ambiguous ASIN-like terms for specialist review. A term can convert once and still be a poor long-term target if it attracts the wrong expectation or creates listing-policy risk. Keep the verified product fact beside the candidate so the reviewer can see why it is relevant.

Require repeat evidence and acceptable economics

Set seller-chosen minimum attributed orders and a complete observation window, then calculate observed ACoS from spend and attributed sales and conversion rate from orders and clicks. Compare the row with the product's reviewed target ACoS and contribution floor. Treat zero-click, zero-sales, and very small samples explicitly rather than dividing by zero or ranking them beside mature rows. Repeat conversion can strengthen a candidate, but reported attribution does not establish incrementality or future results.

Check for duplicates and traffic conflicts

Search the seller-supplied campaign structure for the same normalized term already used as an exact keyword for the advertised product. Also inspect closely overlapping ad groups, portfolio objectives, negatives, and match types. Do not promise that adding an exact target will redirect traffic from the discovery campaign, and do not automatically negate the original source target. The output should identify possible duplication and routing conflicts for review, not pretend the auction has deterministic traffic ownership.

Draft a bounded handoff and compare later

For each qualified candidate, record the exact term, advertised SKU or ASIN, source campaign and ad group, evidence window, clicks, orders, spend, sales, ACoS, chosen bid scenario, and any proposed source negative as separate draft fields. An authorized seller decides placement, bid, budget, and whether to make a source exclusion. Search-term history does not prove an exact keyword will perform, and the analysis must not create a target, change a bid, add a negative, or publish a campaign. Compare a later like-for-like report window.
